Fence Installation

A fence is only as straight as its posts. We set posts properly, plan gates that actually close, and confirm property lines and by-laws before digging.

Fences provide privacy, keep kids and pets safe and define your property. Ironcrest Contracting installs new fences and replaces old ones, with a focus on post installation, because that's what decides whether a fence stays straight through years of frost and wind.

Fence types we install

  • Wood privacy fences — pressure-treated or cedar in board-on-board, shadowbox, horizontal and lattice-top styles.
  • Vinyl fences — low-maintenance privacy and picket styles that don't need staining.
  • Ornamental aluminum — a decorative, open style for front yards, pools and properties where views matter.
  • Chain link — a durable, practical option for larger areas, with optional privacy slats.
  • Gates — walk-through and double drive gates with sturdy framing and hardware that latches reliably.
  • Fence repair and replacement — replacing leaning sections, broken posts and rotted boards.

How the project runs

  1. Site visit. We review the fence line, grade changes, gate locations and any obstacles like trees or existing structures.
  2. Quote. You receive an itemized quote listing materials, height, post spacing, gates and removal of any existing fence.
  3. Locates and layout. We request utility locates through Ontario One Call and lay out the fence line based on the property line you confirm.
  4. Install. Posts are set, then rails, boards or panels and gates are installed, and debris is removed.

Good to know before you start

Property owners are responsible for confirming where their property line is; a survey is the most reliable way to do that. Municipal fence by-laws limit fence heights and may have specific rules for front yards and corner lots, and pool enclosures have separate requirements. It's courteous, and sometimes required, to discuss shared fences with neighbours. Posts need to be set deep enough to resist frost heave. Pairing a new fence with a new deck gives your backyard a finished, consistent look.

What affects the cost of fencing

Fencing cost depends mostly on the length of the fence, its height, the material and the number of gates. Chain link is typically the most affordable per foot, pressure-treated wood comes next, and cedar, vinyl and ornamental aluminum generally cost more. Privacy styles with more boards cost more than open styles. Gates, especially wide double drive gates, add framing and hardware. Sloped yards may need stepped or racked sections. Removing and disposing of an old fence, working around trees or difficult soil and digging near existing structures all add time. We provide an itemized quote that lists length, posts, gates and removal so you can compare options easily.

Fencing questions

How tall can my fence be?

Fence height limits are set by municipal by-laws and often differ for front and back yards. We check the by-law for your property before installing.

Do I need a survey to build a fence?

It's the most reliable way to confirm your property line. Without one, you're responsible for confirming the line, and disputes can be costly.

How long does a wood fence last?

It depends on the material, exposure and maintenance. Cedar and pressure-treated wood fences that are stained and maintained can last many years.
