Accessibility Renovations in Tecumseh

Accessibility Renovations for Tecumseh homes

Tecumseh runs from established neighbourhoods along the Lake St. Clair shoreline south to the larger lots of Oldcastle. In Tecumseh, accessibility work often comes up as homeowners plan to stay in a long-time family home. Building a barrier-free shower, adding grab bar blocking and improving entrances now can make the house work for years to come.

What's included

Barrier-free showers, wider doorways, grab bars and ramps that help you stay safe and independent at home. Depending on your project, the work can include:

• Barrier-free showers
• Grab bars and blocking
• Wider doorways
• Ramps and entries
• Main-floor living
• Flooring and lighting layout
• Home assessment.
• Plan and quote.
• Build.
• Review.

Full details, our process and common questions are on our main accessibility renovations page.

Local conditions in Tecumseh

Tecumseh has many homes from the 1960s through the 1980s alongside newer construction. Older homes often have compact kitchens, original bathrooms and basements that were partly finished years ago. Essex County's heavy clay soils hold water, so we check below-grade spaces for moisture before finishing or renovating them.

Questions to ask before you hire

Whoever you hire for accessibility renovations in Tecumseh, get clear answers to these before signing:

• Will clearances be measured around the actual wheelchair or walker being used?
• Is there solid blocking behind every grab bar?
• How will the shower floor drain properly without a curb?

Permits and approvals

Building permits in Tecumseh are issued by the Town of Tecumseh, and zoning rules come from the Town's zoning by-law. Shoreline and low-lying properties may also need approval from the Essex Region Conservation Authority. We confirm what applies to your project during planning.
